Classification processing

Processing time

A classification decision will be made within 20 working days after your application has been recommended to the board.

If you have paid for Priority Processing, you should receive your decision within five working days.

If we have any problems with your application, a Client Liaison Officer will contact you directly.

While you have active applications, you will receive a daily email showing the status of all your applications and their expected due dates. The information will be accurate at the time the email is sent, and is subject to change. You can also track the progress of your application on the Classification portal.

Decision notification

We will notify you of the decision by emailing you a copy of the classification certificate.

Decisions are published on the National Classification Database the day after application processing is complete.

Turnaround times

Before the processing time starts, Client Liaison Officers must make sure your application is complete and valid before it is recommended to the board. The time these checks take is referred to as 'Administration time'. For a:

  • standard application, Administration time is no more than five (5) working days
  • priority application, Administration time is no more than two (2) working days.

The Client Liaison Team always works to keep Administration time to a minimum, but you need to consider the maximum times listed above, and how these may impact if you have a tight timeframe for receiving your decision.

The times mentioned in processing time only start once these checks are complete and the application has been recommended to the board.

Appealing the decision

You can ask a Client Liaison Officer for a copy of the board's reasons for decision.

If you disagree with the board's decision, you can apply for a review to the Classification Review Board, an independent review body.
