Displaying the classification and consumer advice on advertising

Most advertising for a classified film must display a classification marking.

The general rules are set out in Part 3 of the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) (Markings and Consumer Advice) Determination 2014.

General information:

  • Where practicable, a marking must be displayed on the on the lower left corner of the front face of the thing on which it is displayed, or in close proximity to the title of the film.
  • Markings must be prominent, readily identifiable and clearly legible.
  • Markings must not be covered by other material.
  • Markings must be easily distinguished from the background.
  • A marking must be in the format and proportions shown in Schedule 1.
  • Markings must be displayed on a screen for a period of time that is sufficient to allow the marking to be read in full.
  • Markings may not be required for some advertising—please refer to the specific provisions for more details.

All of the general information listed above is set out in the Markings Determination. In addition, there are specific provisions for different uses of the markings, such as on printed advertising, trailers on television and mobile phones, advertising on the internet etc. Information on how to use the markings correctly and downloads are arranged in topic area sections for ease of access.

Trailers for classified films can only be included on a DVD or shown at the cinema if they are included with a feature film of the same or higher classification. The table below shows this:
