Step 3 - Use the “Check the Classification” message on advertising

Use the “Check the Classification” message on advertising

Most advertising for unclassified films and games must show an ‘advertising message’. This rule applies to many different types of advertising, including film directories and session times; printed advertising and posters; and internet, cinema and moving image trailers.

The rules are set out in the Classification (Advertising of Unclassified Films and Computer Games Scheme) Determination 2009.

The advertising message

There are two advertising messages that are available, depending on the advertisement:

The message

short message

long message

CTC Butyon

CTC Butoon

“CTC”

“Check the Classification”

Used for

  • Print and internet advertising
  • Film directories
  • Print and internet advertising
  • Moving image advertising i.e. internet and mobile phone advertising (as a static or animated ticker)
  • Trailers (as a tag)

Additional information

You must include a legend at least 2mm high that explains what “CTC” means

There is a minimum number of seconds that tickers and tags must be shown with an advertisement

General information:

  • One of the messages must be shown (either the short or long message)
  • Markings must be clearly legible
  • The message must be prominent and easy to distinguish from the background
  • The message must be shown long enough for it to be read (there are minimum times set out in the determination)
  • The message must be shown as close to the start of the advertisement as possible

All of the general information listed above is set out in the Advertising Determination. In addition, there are specific provisions for different uses of the advertising message, i.e. on a DVD slick, on a disc, on a box set, etc. Information on how to use the advertising message correctly and downloads are arranged in topic area sections for ease of access.

Exceptions

There are a few types of advertising that do not require the advertising message:

  • an advertisement in the form of a window cling, display bin, standee or banner;
  • a printed advertisement that has an area of at least 300 square centimetres;
  • an advertisement on the Internet that is smaller in area than 176 pixels x 128 pixels

All other types of advertising for the unclassified films or computer games must show the advertising message.
