General rules

Four groups of people can apply for review of a Board decision:

  • The Commonwealth Minister with responsibility for classification matters
  • The original applicant for classification
  • The publisher of the film, publication or computer game
  • A ‘person aggrieved’ by the decision

The Commonwealth Minister with responsibility for classification matters must also apply for a review if requested to by a state and territory Minister with responsibility for classification matters.

A ‘person aggrieved’ is broadly defined as someone who can demonstrate an interest in the subject matter of the work in question that extends beyond that of an ordinary member of the public.

Applications must generally be made within 30 days of receipt of notice of the relevant decision by the Classification Board.

More information about the process can be found on the application form.
