6 July 2012: R 18+ for computer games legislation receives Royal Assent

On 6 July 2012, the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Amendment (R18+ Computer Games) Bill 2012 (the Bill) received Royal Assent.

On 18 June 2012 the Bill was passed in the Senate with no amendments.

On 19 February 2012 the Bill was passed by the House of Representatives.

The Bill amends the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Act 1995 to introduce an R 18+ (Restricted) classification category for computer games and makes a consequential amendment to the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 to recognise the introduction of the R 18+ category for computer games.

The Act is to commence on 1 January 2013.
