Getting Started

Our database contains more than 250,000 classification decisions made since 1970.

The main search box appears directly under the classification markings, at the top of the screen.

The main search box defaults to give you results that match any word in the record and displays decisions only up to MA 15+ (or equivalent).

The dropdown box can help you to do some basic refinements - you can choose from:

  • All titles;
  • Films only;
  • Computer games only;
  • Literature only; or
  • Site content (this option searches the pages of the site, not our database of titles)

The search is not case sensitive - Birthday, BIRTHday and BiRtHdAy all give you the same results.

You can sort your results by date and title - the search defaults to showing you the closest matches to your search query.

You can display 'adult and restricted material' by clicking on the filter at the top of the results screen.

Too many or too few results?

If your search gives you too many results, you can filter your results with the categories on the left hand side of the screen i.e. rating and country, or by add more specific keywords to your search.

If your search gives you no or very few search results, you may need to remove some words from your search query, or try searching for a different part of the record, i.e. instead of title, try director, or add the 'adult and restricted material' filter to include these results in your search.

You can also search for classification decisions using the advanced search features - these are located on the main search page.

Advanced search tips

On the main search page, you can search for classification decisions by title, otherdetails contained on the record, by a date range, classification decision and classification number.

You can use only one option to search, or many advanced search options to give you very targeted results i.e. you could search for films with "Box" in the title, classified PG, between certain dates.

Search option

How to use

Example

Search the Classification Database

Typing your keywords in this box will return results where the keywords match any part of the record

The results will display with the closest matches at the top of the list

searching for "Tarantino" will give you results where "Tarantino" matches the title, director, producer or production compuany of any records in our database

Find items by title

There are 4 options that help you to include and exclude results, depending on the options you choose

These options allow you to search for phrases, keywords or to exclude specific words

typing "Star Wars" into the exact phrase, and "Lego" into none of these words will return all results where "Star Wars" is a phrase (both words in the order typed), but will not show you results where "Lego" is also in the title

Find items using other information

You can refine your search by including director, producer, production company or country information

Please note: this information may be incomplete on older records, so we recommend you only use these to refine your search if you get a lot of results and need to reduce them, or if the desired result is a newer title

type "MCG" into Director

type "China" into Country

Search using media

You can refine your search to include one or more types of media

These are all checked as a default

only films; films and computer games only by using the checkboxes

Using classification type

This allows you to refine your search down to a specific classification type

Please note: to view adult/restricted classifications (R 18+, X 18+, RC, Cat 1, Cat 2) you will need to check the restricted content box at the bottom of the screen, or no results will be visible

PG, Cat 1

Classification number

You can use this to confirm a classification number you've been provided is accurate and the classification details match those that have been provided to you

Classified before/after

This allows you to narrow your results down to a certain date range

These must be entered as dd-mm-yyyy or yyyy only

films classified M between 01-01-2012 and 15-01-2012

Restricted content

Checking the box will give you decision about adult and restricted content i.e. R 18+, X 18+, RC, Cat 1 and Cat 2

This box is unchecked by default - you can also 'check' this box once you have started your search by clicking on the filter on your search results page
