Release of draft Guidelines for the Classification of Computer Games
Before the Guidelines for the Classification of Computer Games were considered at the meeting of the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General on 22 July 2011, an online survey on this website sought views on the introduction of an R 18+ category for computer games, and on the proposed guidelines.
Survey results and the proposed guidelines, which were amended by Ministers at that meeting, are now available from the Proposed draft Guidelines for Computer Games page.
Mobile and online computer games
On 2 November 2011, the House of Representatives passed the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Amendment (Online Games) Bill 2011. The Bill will commence once the Senate passes it.
The Bill introduces a two year exemption from classification for both mobile phone games, and computer games that are wholly online. This exemption will not apply to games that are likely to be refused classification. A number of other safeguards will also be in place.
