General requirements for display, format, legibility and placement of classification markings on containers and slicks

General markings requirements are set out in Part 3 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007. Relevant sections are indicated below.

Markings must be displayed

All containers must display classification markings.

Exceptions to this requirement occur for markings on the spine only, if the person is incapable of adding to the content of the identification material (for example, the slick) on the container. (See Section 9 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

If it is not practicable to comply with a display requirement, the marking will be taken to comply with the requirement if the marking complies as nearly as is reasonably practicable with the requirement. (See Section 11 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

The markings will be taken to comply with the requirements for markings on containers if the markings are placed on the container itself or on a slick that forms a part of the container that is clearly visible. (See Section 12 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Combination boxes must be displayed in the format and proportions as shown in Part 6 of Schedule 1 of the Determination. (See Section 22 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Format and legibility

Classification markings on containers must be clearly legible. (See Section 20 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Classification markings must not be obscured by other material on the container. (See Section 21 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Markings must be displayed in high contrast to the background. (See Sections 13, 15 and 19 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Coloured markings must be coloured in accordance with CMYK values as listed in Part 3 of Schedule 1 of the Determination. (See Section 13 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

The classification character or classification symbol may be displayed in monochrome in a monochrome environment. (See Section 15 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

The font for the classification symbol must be displayed in FF Din Bold. (See Section 17 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

The font of consumer advice within the combination boxes and classification description within the classification description box must be printed in black Universe condensed regular type. (See Section 18 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

The first word of a consumer advice phrase should be an upper case letter and consecutive words should be a lower case letter. Each new consumer advice phrase should follow this rule (See Schedule 1 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Placement of markings

Example of compliance: DVD slick with the correct use of the classification markings [PDF 2.35MB].

Markings on the front face of a container must be placed in the lower left corner of the face. If this is not possible, it should appear as close as practicable to the lower left corner, so that the classification symbol rectangle component of the combination box remains wholly within the left half of the lower third of the thing on which it is displayed. (See Section 10 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Markings on the back face of a container must be placed in the lower right corner of the face. If this is not possible, it should appear as close as practicable to the lower right corner, so that the classification symbol rectangle component of the combination box remains wholly within the lower third of the thing on which it is displayed. (See Section 10 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

What markings do I use when re-releasing a classified film that does not have consumer advice?

The Board has given consumer advice with classifications since May 1989. If you are re-releasing a film classified before that date, without any additional material, you have two options:

  1. Use the old marking that will not have a consumer advice, or
  2. If you want to use the new markings the classification description should be included in the white space of the combination box where the consumer advice would normally be.

Containers for Discs, Videocassettes and Small Storage Devices Containing Advertising Material only (for example – demo discs)

Containers for devices containing advertising material only are to be marked as per requirements for containers for individual films or computer games listed under Specific Provisions. Markings must be for the classification applicable to the film or computer game with the highest classification that is advertised within the device.

For example, if you have a sample disc containing advertisements for 3 titles classified G, 4 titles classified M and 1 title classified MA 15+, the container must carry the MA 15+ markings as per the specifications listed in the standard containers section.

In addition, if the title or titles of the films or computer games advertised are listed on the back face of the container, one of the following classification markings must be placed next to the title/s:

Multiple Title Packs

Containers for multiple title packs are to be marked as per containers for individual films or computer games listed under Specific Provisions. Markings must be for the classification applicable to the film or computer game with the highest classification that is contained within the multiple title pack.

For example, if you have a multiple title pack with one title classified G, three titles classified PG and two titles classified R 18+, the container must carry the R 18+ markings as per the specifications listed in the standard containers section.

If all the individual titles contained in a boxset have the same classification, the consumer advices for all the titles need to be included. However if a couple of the individual titles have consumer advices that are for the same classifiable element then only the higher one needs to be included on the boxset.

For example, if there is a boxset that consists of two individual titles where one title has been classified M Low level coarse language, Sexual references and the second title has been classified M High level coarse language, Drug use, then the marking on the boxset would be a M combination box with the consumer advice being High level coarse language, Sexual references, Drug use.

In addition, if the title or titles of the films or computer games within the multiple title pack are listed on the back face of the container, one of the following classification markings must be placed next to the title/s:

Container type Download Classification symbol
Coloured container
Option 1 5 mm colour classification symbol square [ZIP 2.24MB]
Option 2 4 mm classification symbol [ZIP 2.19MB]
Option 3 classification character at same font size at title [ZIP 2.15MB]
Black and White container
Option 1 5 mm mono classification symbol square [ZIP 2.22MB]
Option 2 4 mm classification symbol [ZIP 2.19MB]
Option 3 classification character at same font size at title [ZIP 2.15MB]

Also, consumer advice for each title listed on the back face of the multiple title pack must appear next to the title in text at least 2mm high.

Unusual Containers

An unusual container such as one that does not have corners or flat surfaces must comply with the markings specified above as closely as possible.
