Classification markings downloads - print advertising
The requirements and downloads available from this page apply to newspapers, magazines, flyers and posters.
There are different versions of the markings for different sized advertisements. In general, classification markings must be placed in the lower left corner of an advertisement.
Advertising larger than 2.5 m² does not require markings.

General requirements for display, format, legibility and placement of classification markings on print advertising
General provisions are set out in Part 3 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007. Relevant sections are indicated below.
Markings must be displayed
All print advertising under 2.5 m² must display classification markings.
Advertising in the form of a window cling, a display bin or a standee do not require markings. (See Section 9 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
If it is not practicable to comply with a display requirement, the marking will be taken to comply with the requirement if the marking complies, as nearly as reasonably practicable, with the requirement. (See Section 11 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
Combination boxes must be displayed in the format and proportions as shown in Part 6 of Schedule 1 of the Determination. (See Section 22 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
Format and legibility
Classification markings on advertising must be clearly legible. (See Section 20 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
Classification markings must not be obscured by other material on the advertising. (See Section 21 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
Markings must be displayed in high contrast to the background. (See Sections 13, 15 and 19 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
Coloured markings must be coloured in accordance with CMYK values as listed in Part 3 of Schedule 1 of the Determination. (See Section 13 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
The classification character or classification symbol may be displayed in monochrome in a monochrome environment. (See Section 15 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
The font for the classification symbol must be displayed in FF Din Bold. (See Section 17 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
The font of consumer advice within the combination boxes and classification description within the classification description box must be printed in black Universe condensed regular type. (See Section 18 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
Placement of markings
Markings on advertising must be placed in the lower left corner of the advertisement. If this is not possible, it should appear as close as practicable to the lower left corner, so that the classification symbol rectangle component of the combination box remains wholly within the left half of the lower third of the object on which it is displayed. (See Section 10 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).
Specific provisions

Single title advertisements
For a small advertisement (less than 75 cm², or less than A7), a 5 mm classification symbol [ZIP 2.19MB] must be placed in the lower left corner of the advertisement.

For advertisements at least 75 cm² and less than 2.5 m², there is one option for marking, which is the combination box. The following table sets out sizes of advertisements indicates the markings which are to be used.

For material classified G which has no consumer advice the markings can be a G classification rectangle or a G combination-style box. The dimensions for the combination-style boxes are the same as those for the combination boxes as listed in the table below. The classification symbol rectangles should be in at least the following dimensions:
- 10mm high and 17 mm wide
- 15 mm high and 26 mm wide
- 20 mm high and 34 mm wide
- 30 mm high and 51 mm wide
- 40 mm high and 68 mm wide
- 50 mm high and 85 mm wide.

Multiple title advertisements
For multiple title advertising, there are several options for markings depending on the size of the page or poster.
Multiple title printed advertisements such as catalogues and magazines
For multiple title advertisements on pages smaller than A3 (1245 cm²), the following options are available:
Option 1
If the pack shot of the product used in the advertisement is large enough so that the marking on the pack shot is not less than 4 mm in height then the marking on the pack shot is sufficient.
Option 2
If the markings included in the pack shots are less than 4 mm, or if the markings in the pack shots are obscured, then a marking needs to be superimposed on the lower left corner of the pack shot or under the pack shot.
- In a colour or black and white advertisement, a 10 pt black upper case character/s on white background [ZIP 2.2MB] or a 10 pt white upper case character/s on black background [ZIP 2.19MB] in the lower left corner of the pack shot or immediately below the pack shot, or
- In a colour advertisement, a 5 mm colour classification symbol square [ZIP 2.24MB] or a 5 mm colour classification symbol rectangle [ZIP 2.1MB] on the lower left corner of the pack shot, or, if a pack shot is not used in the advertisement, next to the title, or
Example of compliance: Multiple title ad with colour classification square and classification key [ZIP 4.6MB]. - In a black and white advertisement, a 5 mm mono classification symbol square [ZIP 2.22MB] or a 5 mm mono classification symbol rectangle [ZIP 2.1MB] on the lower left corner of the pack shot, or, if a pack shot is not used in the advertisement, next to the title.
A key or legend must appear on at least one page where films or computer games are advertised, using text at least 2 mm high, listing each classification marking and classification descriptions. Other pages with advertisements for films or games must refer to the page on which the key or legend appears.
Large multiple title printed advertisements such as posters
For multiple title advertisements on pages at least A3 (1245 cm²) size and less than 2.5 m², the following options are available:
Option 1
If the pack shot of the product used in the advertisement is large enough so that the marking on the pack shot is not less than 20 mm in height then the marking on the pack shot is sufficient.
Option 2
If this is not the case, or if the markings in the pack shots are obscured, then a 20 mm combination box needs to be superimposed on the lower left corner of the pack shot or under the pack shot, or near the title if pack shots are not used.
A combination box (at least 20mm high and 62mm wide) must be used.
