Classification markings on trailers

Trailers in these media can use either a "tag" before the trailer or a "ticker" that appears during the trailer. A three second tag can be used on trailers that run for 60 seconds or less. All other trailers will be preceded by tags that are at least five seconds long. Where a "ticker" is used instead of a tag, it will always be at least 10 seconds long. All tags feature the classification, the classification description and the consumer advice that applies to the particular film or computer game. Tickers feature the classification and the consumer advice only.

Please note: These are low resolution examples only and cannot be downloaded for use as a marking. Their appearance here is purely for the purpose of showing you what they look like.

The consumer advice featured on the following tags and tickers are examples only and are not drawn from real products. Examples are in the form of the M classification.

General requirements for display, format and legibility of classification markings on trailers

General provisions are set out in Part 3 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007. Relevant sections are indicated below.

Markings must be displayed

All moving image advertising must display classification markings.

Exceptions to this requirement occur for markings before moving image advertising on mediums other than celluloid if the person is incapable of adding to the content to the advertisement. (See Section 9 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

If it is not practicable to comply with a display requirement, the marking will be taken to comply with the requirement if the marking complies, as nearly as reasonably practicable, with the requirement. (See Section 11 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Format and legibility

Classification markings on moving image advertising must be clearly legible. Markings must be displayed for a period of time that is sufficient to allow the markings to be read in full. (See Section 20 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Classification markings must not be obscured by other material on the advertising. (See Section 21 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Markings must be displayed in high contrast to the background. (See Sections 13, 15 and 19 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Coloured markings must be coloured in accordance with CMYK or RGB values as listed in Part 3 of Schedule 1 of the Determination. (See Section 13 and 14 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

The classification character or classification symbol may be displayed in monochrome in a monochrome environment. A classification character or classification symbol displayed on screen must be displayed with at least 70 per cent opacity. (See Section 15 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Tickers must be displayed at least at the height of 32 pixels lines or five per cent of the height of the active screen area of the presentation format. The greater of the two must be used. (See Section 16 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

The font for the classification symbol must be displayed in FF Din Bold. (See Section 17 of the Classification (Markings for Films and Computer Games) Determination 2007).

Specific provisions

Single trailers that are not more than 60 seconds

For a trailer not more than 60 seconds, there are three options for classification markings.

  1. A classification ticker shown for at least 10 seconds during the trailer. The ticker must include:

Download the ticker using the classification symbol rectangle [ZIP 2.19MB]

  1. A classification tag to be shown for at least three seconds before the trailer. The tag must include:

This tag is available on disc from the Classification Branch.

  1. The Classification symbol [ZIP 2.19MB] as a ticker shown for 30 seconds in the lower left corner of the area of the screen commonly known as the title-safe area. The marking must be in high contrast to the background and with at least 70 per cent opacity. If the trailer is less than 30 seconds the marking must be shown for the duration of the trailer.

Please note: Complementary classification enforcement laws may require the inclusion of consumer advice in advertisements relating to films and computer games. For more information and links to the relevant enforcement laws, please refer to the Attorney-General's Department website.

Single trailers that are more than 60 seconds

For a trailer more than 60 seconds, there are two options for classification markings.

  1. A classification ticker shown for at least 10 seconds during the trailer. The ticker must include:

Download the ticker using the classification rectangle [ZIP 2.19MB].

  1. A classification tag to be shown for at least five seconds before the trailer. The tag must include:

This tag is available on disc from the Classification Branch.

Multiple title trailers

For trailers for two or more films or computer games, a ticker must be shown, including the Classification symbol [ZIP 2.19MB] for each title advertised and the relevant consumer advice, if any. The ticker must be shown for at least 10 seconds in high contrast to the background and at least 70 per cent opacity.

The symbol/s and consumer advice should be preceded by a statement to the effect that the films in the advertisement have the classification mentioned in the advertisement.

For films or computer games with the same classification, the relevant symbol/s need only to appear once and the consumer advices for all the titles need to be included. However, if a couple of the individual titles have consumer advices that are for the same classifiable element (violence, sex, language etc) then only the higher one needs to be included in the advertisement.

For example, if the advertisement is for two M titles: M Mild violence, Moderate coarse language and M, Moderate violence and two MA15+ titles: MA15+ Drug use, Adult themes and MA15+ Adult themes the statement would be:

  • Films/Games are classified [M symbol] Moderate coarse language, Moderate violence; [MA15+ symbol] Drug use, Adult themes.

Trailers on small screens

Trailers shown on a screen with a presentation format of less than 300 pixel lines in height must carry classification markings. The marking must be shown as soon as practicable after the beginning of the trailer and must be at a height that is at least 5 per cent of the active screen area of the presentation format.

The marking can either be a Classification symbol [ZIP 2.19MB], a Colour classification symbol square [ZIP 2.27MB] or a Colour classification rectangle [ZIP 2.12MB].
