National Classification Code
The National Classification Code names and describes the classification categories.
These categories are either advisory or legally restricted. The Code also describes material that is to be classified 'RC' (Refused Classification).
Classification decisions are required to give effect to the following principles which are set out in the Code:
- adults should be able to read, hear and see what they want
- minors should be protected from material likely to harm or disturb them
- everyone should be protected from exposure to unsolicited material that they find offensive, and
- the need to take account of community concerns about:
- depictions that condone or incite violence, particularly sexual violence, and
- the portrayal of persons in a demeaning manner.
