Compliance for advertising publications
Most classification requirements are similar in each of the States and Territories. However, there are some differences. The information in this section is provided as a general guide only. You should refer to the relevant State or Territory classification legislation for detailed information.

Which submittable publications can be advertised?
A submittable publication must be classified by the Classification Board before it can be advertised in Australia.
Unclassified submittable publications cannot be advertised.
Publications that have been Refused Classification (RC) cannot be advertised.
Requirements for advertising classified publications
There are no restrictions on advertising a publication that has been classified Unrestricted.
An advertisement for a Category 1 Restricted publication can only be published in a Category 1 Restricted or Category 2 Restricted publication or in a restricted publications area.
An advertisement for a Category 2 Restricted publication can only be published in a Category 2 Restricted publication or in a restricted publications area.
A publication containing an advertisement for a Category 1 Restricted or Category 2 Restricted publication must include a list of the classification symbols and determined (classification) markings for publications.
Category 1 Restricted and Category 2 Restricted publications cannot be advertised in Queensland.
Requirements for marking different types of advertising for classified publications
The Determination of Markings for Publications [PDF 16KB] prescribes the classification markings and how they are to be displayed on advertisements for classified publications.
The overriding requirement is that classification markings are to be clearly legible and that their typeface be prominently and easily distinguishable from the background.
