Proposed draft Guidelines for Computer Games

On 25 May 2011, draft proposed guidelines for the classification of computer games were published on this website, accompanied by an online survey that sought views on the introduction of an R 18+ category for computer games, and on the proposed guidelines.

  • There were 10,334 responses received to the survey.
  • A significant majority (71 per cent) supported the R 18+ category.
  • 63 per cent (6510 respondents) supported both the proposed R18+ category for computer games and the draft guidelines
  • 8 per cent(825 respondents) supported the proposed R18+ category but did not support the draft Guidelines
  • 1.6 per cent (163 respondents) did not support the proposed R18+ category but supported the draft guidelines
  • 27.4 per cent (2836 respondents) did not support the proposed R18+ category and did not support the draft guidelines.

The draft guidelines published on 25 May 2011 were subsequently amended. The changes that were made reflect concerns expressed about those guidelines by the public, stakeholders and Censorship Ministers. The new proposed guidelines can be downloaded below:
