'The Friend', is a moving story of love, friendship, grief, healing, and the magical bond between a woman and her dog. It is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s award–winning 2018 novel. Iris unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, Walter, and finds herself burdened with his Great Dane, Apollo, who is depressed by the inexplicable disappearance of his master. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, by the threat of eviction (dogs are prohibited in her apartment building), and the need to break her writer’s block of 2-years. Plaintive and searching, 'The Friend' is both a reflection on loss and grief, and a celebration of woman-dog bonding and resolve.
