Godland is a Danish/Icelandic drama set in the late 19th century, in which Lucas, an idealistic but naïve young clergyman, travels to a remote part of Iceland to build a church and photograph its people. He is overcome by the deprivations of the journey, and life in the remote community. The film is in Danish and Icelandic languages with English subtitles.

Themes

The film depicts the actual butchering of a sheep. Although the killing of the animal is not shown, the removal of the animal's gut and hide is shown in detail. the decomposition of a dead horse is also depicted in a series of still images. Additionally, the accidental death of a man, his burial, and the subsequent exposure of his body by floodwater is shown.

Violence

A male is killed by knife. No detail of the stabbing is seen, but the bloodied knife is briefly visible. Another character is killed by having his head bashed against rocks, during an alteration.

Sex

A male character narrates a long saga of a companion's nightmare, in which he dreamt he watched while his wife engaged in sexual intercourse with a number of his neighbours, but he was powerless to act.

Language

The film contains use of the words "shit", "ass" and "pissed".

Nudity

The film contains a brief non-sexualised depiction of a fully nude male, full length in medium distance. His body is partly obscured by shadow, but his penis is briefly glimpsed.
