In Rangoon, Burma in 1918 an English civil servant, Edward Abbot is due to meet his fiancee of 7 years, Molly Singleton to get married. He panicks and boards a boat for Singapore where he meets Molly's cousin Reginald, who takes Edward for a spy on government business. Receiving a telegram from Molly who has tracked his movement, Edward takes off again for Bangkok and after surviving a train wreck continues on a grand tour of Asian countries ending up in remote China. The second half of the film shows Molly's story, following Edward through the same journey until she also meets her fate in China. The film intercuts the period narrative with many present day colourful scenes of all the locatuons visited.
