Set in Southern USA after the Second World War, the film centres around a ruthless opportunist who tries to buy his cousin's land, and when thwarted, brings several tragedies to the lives of others.

Themes

The film is based on themes of racial discrimination, segregation and injustice. It contains numerous historical verbal racial slurs and references such as “nigger” and “piccaninnies”. The film also contains themes of family dysfunction, grief, and corrupt legal proceedings.

Violence

The film contains scenes of dynamite explosions, including an incident where a boy drowns in floodwater. Another child is badly injured by falling furniture. A mob of townsfolk gather to menace a family at their home, and a sheriff brandishes a pistol. The film contains scenes where a man holds his wife roughly as he tries to entice her sexually.

Sex

The film contains sex scenes and sexual references, including a scene where a woman sucks the mouthpiece of a saxophone suggestively. A woman sits on top of a man to kiss him, and man says, “Hotter than a two-dollar pistol, ain’t ya.” A couple flirt and start to undress in the front seat of a car before sliding down the car seats out of view.

Language
