Deep in the wilds of Ireland, lies the vast and remote estate of Knowl. Forbidding, imposing - a place of secrets, . Knowl is no home for a young woman, and certainly not for Maud, just 18 years old. Freshly burdened with the sudden death of her father, and granted inheritance to his entire estate, Maud is alone, unschooled in the ways of society, and vulnerable.
Her Uncle Silas, a man if ill-repute is granted guardianship over Maud and her estate until she reaches the age of 21 and arrives to live at Knowl with his son and teenaged daighter and her French governess. So begins a game of manipulation by Silas to have his son Edward marry Maud to ensure his family's stake in the family fortune. Maud's reistance leads to an assault on her and threats of being put in an asylum with the collusion of a corrupt doctor. Maud must use her wits to turn the tables on her Uncle leading to more unexpected revelations, family secrets and deaths.
