When We Last Spoke is a dramatic film about two estranged sisters, who were abandoned by their mother at a young age, growing up in the care of their generous and welcoming grandparents.

Themes

The film contains a sequence in which a man is implicitly killed in action on a battlefield, post-action visuals of an elderly woman who has implicitly died in her sleep, and a sequence in which a woman passes out after hitting herself on the head.
