Classify a film for cinema release
This section is for anyone who is applying for classification of a film that will be shown in cinemas.
Book a screening date
Films that will be released in cinemas require a screening date to be booked by contacting the applications team at applications@classification.gov.au.
Your booking is only confirmed if you have received a confirmation email from us, and an online application submitted through the Classification Portal can only be accepted after a booking has been confirmed.
We advise that you book the screening date as soon as possible. Screening times can be booked out for several weeks in advance during high-demand periods.
Pay the fee
Applications are processed when the payment has been received in full.
The application fee is based on the length of the film, rounded up to the nearest minute.
| Running time | Fee |
| 0–60 minutes | $1,180 |
| 61–120 minutes | $2,180 |
| 121–180 minutes | $2,760 |
| 181–240 minutes | $3,540 |
| More than 240 minutes | $6,540 |
Generally, edited versions require payment for the entire length of the film, even when the film has been previously classified.
Submit your application
You can submit your application via the Classification Portal.
Please ensure you submit all required documentation, files and fees during the application creation process. Any omissions will delay your application.
Application requirements
All applications need to include:
- a complete and final copy of the film in DCP, DVD or Blu-ray format
- Key Delivery Messages (KDM) or DCP keys if relevant (contact us to find out how to generate DCP keys)
- a detailed synopsis of the film, and
- payment.
For more information on providing media and format specifications, see application process.
Submission deadline
Applications must be submitted and payment made in full at least 2 business days before the booked screening date.
Things to consider
Security of material
We keep a register of films submitted to the Classification Board. DCPs, DVDs and Blu-rays are stored in a secure area with restricted access.
KDM information
For films provided in DCP format, please ensure the Key Delivery Messages (KDM) will provide access to the film for a full working day, from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
If you cannot provide a KDM that is open for a full working day, contact us to discuss your options. You might need to organise additional access to your film outside the original window.
The screening date will be delayed if DCP media or keys do not work correctly.
Return of material
If you would like your submitted copy returned to you after classification, you can contact us at applications@classification.gov.au to organise collection or return postage.
Please note, if you request a return, you will need to provide any costs associated with the return.
Attendance at screenings
Screenings are restricted to:
- Classification Board members
- a projectionist
- up to four of your representatives.
The Director of the Classification Board needs to approve attendance at screenings. If you would like to attend the screening, you must tell us when you book. Screenings will commence on schedule, even if you or your nominated representative is late or cannot attend.
We aim to provide documents in an accessible format. Please contact us if you are experiencing issues accessing our content.
